In 1970 there was a movement to eliminate segregation from the public. The largest was with the Native Americans and the African Americans. In 1972 congress passed the Indian Education Act and in 1975 they passed Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.. With these acts the Natives were able to have a future and their children were able to have a future that they dreamed about and not what the government wanted. Nixon helped with desegregation in 1972 by putting almost 90% of all children in a desegregated school. 1970’s were the era for making a fresh start for everyone. (Littell 931)
First Analysis:There is propaganda. Drugs are being sold to citizens and to school children and it needs to be stopped. They are having a march on the fourth of July to stop the flow of the poisonous drugs that are being passed around. They want the government to step in “let the government know that we the citizens had enough poison from the Mafia suppliers and Black Dealers in death to our children”. This piece of propaganda was aimed towards blacks and whites to march and make the fourth of July 1970 a memorable day To get to primary source
second Analysis: This is a letter from Luann Bennett to senator smathers. Luann is for the equal rights amendments and is sharing his beliefs with senator smathers. It is believed that rights and responsibilities should not be based on sex or marital status and should only be based upon capability. Promotions should be given to those qualified and children should be awarded to the parent most qualified to provide in a divorce. She wants the senator to "Vote for, speak for, encourage support of the Equal Rights Amendment. " to get to letter from Luann Bennett
Civil Rights
Civil Rights was something that had to be fought for in the 1970's. People were afraid of what was happening in the vietnam war and when people are afraid a lot of weight is placed on the goverments shoulders. The goverments job is to protect without taking away rights and many times things are taken to far. In 1973 War Powers Act was passed which stated that the president must inform congress within 48 hours if US forces are sent into a hostile area without a declaration of war. These help protect the soldiers and take some power away from the president himself.(Littell 913)
Analysis:Darius Swann wrote a letter to the Charlotte Mecklenburg school board regarding his son James swan who was six at the time. Darius and his wife wanted James to attend the Charlotte Mecklenburg School for a few reasons a big one was that they wanted James to attend an integrated school. Darius and his wife believed that this would best prepare their boy for society. They thought that this would help James’ development continue and remain healthy. Darius and his wife thought this was the best place for their son to be and they were trying to make it possible. To Darius Swann Letter
Second Primary Source Amalysis: Next I have a primary source on the Roe v. Wade case which took place in 1973. The Roe v. Wade Case was on whether abortion should be legal or illegal. The question is whether the government has a right to choose this, and when it is that life begins. “The unborn have never been recognized in the law as persons in the whole sense,” (Justice Harry Blackmun’s Majority Opinion part IX). They argued that the ninth amendment is broad enough to include a woman’s right to decide whether or not to have an abortion. Different physicians, philosophers, everyone seems to have their own thinking and ideas of, and about abortion. This case made abortions a right but brought an end to illegal “back-alley” abortions. Technology
A big thing that came around in 1975 was the personal computer. Computers are something that are depended on and used all around the world. The personal computers were first used by the united states. In 1976 the ink jet printer was also invented. They took some big steps in technology in the 1970's; and these steps are the ones that affect us today. To Secondary Document
Analysis: ON April 11, 1970 Apollo 13 was launched. While trying to get to the moon a part of the ship broke off endangering the astronaughts. They were planning to land on the moon but with this glitch they had to turn around. They were able to go around the moon and look at the moon as they pass. On April 17 of that year they landed. It was a close call for the astronaughts but they made in making Apollo 13 a known event for the United states. To Primary Document
Analysis: When picture phones first came out people didnt it was thought of as being to bulky and to hard to use. These people had nothing to do with a picture that small. But in 1970 a commercial picture phone service started out of pittsburgh through AT&T with the prediction that a million picture phones would be in use by 1980. To Primary Document
Cold War
The cold war was slowing down by the 1970's. Then Nixon had US troops invade cambodia; Things then heated up. Students across the country went on strike.
National guard got called in which then led to protesters throwing rocks, and the national guard shooting. There were 9 people wounded and 4 people killed from the massive student protest at Kent State University of Ohio. (Littell 909)
Analysis: My first primary document talks about the procedure that was taken and the things that had to be thought of in the withdrawl from vietnam. There were different "phases" to this operation and this shows them all. Such as on Febuary 2nd president Nixon Authorized phase two. Many US officials were oblivious to what was happening and how things really were. We are now able to look back on these events with a clearer view. To Primary Document
Analysis: New York times revealed that the pentagon papers consist of secrets and lies. It ends up to be Supreme court tapes and Nixon's tapes . H.R. Haldeman is saying that you can't trust the government and should never believe what they say. You should not trust anyones judgement but your own.Things are done that the president wants to be done, but the president can be wrong. Noone is perfect, even the people who should be. Economics
The 1970's were rough times as far as economics go. Inflation and unemployment seemed to rise and rise; stagflation. In 1971 Nixon turned to price and wage controls. He froze workers wages and businesses prices and fees for 90 days in hopes to prevent costs getting to high. Inflation stopped for a little time the recession went on. Gasoline and heating oil costs went up pushing inflation from 6 percent to 11 percent by the end of 1974.Things were going down hill and noone really knew what to do or how to hand the situation effectively. (Littell 937)
Analysis: This is a speech given by Gerald Rudolf Ford on Ocober 8, 1974.He talks of the economic difficulties of the time. He believes many of the ideas that are going around that people think may help the economy should be combined to really work. One advantage we have is that we are the world's greatest producer of food, and we should start producing even more. He believes that we depend way to much on energys such as oil and gas and that we have an energy problem. He belives that more capital is needed. Things are not going to change if we dont do something about it and there is not just one solution, there are many, these many should be combined. To Primary Document
Analysis: The next primary document i have is a speech by Richard Nixon himself. He discusses why he thinks we are having the problems we are like unemployment. He believes that unemployment rates are so high because two million workers have been released from the armed forces and other places as the war slows down, and something needs to be done about it. He believes this is far from the only issue. He is going to do what he can to produce higher wages in the end. He will lower the prices of cars, and allow tax payers to deduct extra money. We need to push for a better economy and that is exactly what we are going to do. To Primary Document
